Parit Malintang, (Antara Sumbar) - The Government of Padangpariaman District, West Sumatra, develops coconut and cocoa as mainstay commodities because both of them have great potential to be developed.

"Both of plants have been widely planted by community and it is supported by climate in Padangpariaman," Head of Agriculture and Food Security of Padangpariaman, Yurisman Jacob stated in Parit Malintang, Wednesday.

Both types of plants are spreading across 17 sub-districts in the district and become one of the sources of community livelihood.

Coconut plantation area in the district is about 40 thousand hectares with the production of more than 600 million grains per year.

The coconut is a small portion consumed by local community and the rest is exported both outside the district and province.

While the area of cocoa garden in the area reached 20 thousand hectares with productivity reached five tons per month.

Separately, Head of Local Integrated Service and Industry Service Office, Hendra Aswara said some people in the area have processed the two commodities into finished products.

"Coconut oil made soap and then exported to Arab countries, while coconut is exported to Europe," he said.

In addition, the community also processed cocoa into chocolate bars and powder with high fat content. (cha)
